My credo
If you don't have time to do it right the first time when will you have time to do it again?
If I am posting this in the wrong section just let me know. I have a 98 Ranger with the 4.0 OHV engine on its 3rd set of heads, after years of questions with no solid answer I finally heard one that makes sense. I was told that Ford had heads cast in two different locations, one of which used an incorrect formula leading to a weaker casting. The heads crack between the intake and exhaust valves on the forward two cylinders. Has anyone else heard of this? Can anyone confirm or debunk this? Thank you, JJ.

The 4.0l OHV heads did have weak/thin casting between valve seats, no secret there.

But never seen one crack without overheating FIRST
Don't think it matters where it was cast, the weak/thin part is just at a place at the top of the cylinder that gets the hottest, and if it passes a certain temperature the metal expands too far and it cracks.
I know there were some claims by 3rd party castings that say they changed that, not sure that is even possible or Ford would have done that over the 3 different casting versions from 1990-2000.
