I am trying to do the last item on my 5.0 swap and have some question. I have a 98 ranger that was a 3.0 5spd 4x4 truck with rear abs only. I swapped in a 5.0 from a 97 explorer. I also swapped in a 4406 transfer case.

(1) The ranger runs and drives but I just got a P0500 code (Vehicle Speed Sensor Malfunction). The 4406 transfer case didn’t have a speed sensor. Is there a way to wire the rear abs sensor up to take care of this code?

(2) I was also wondering if any wiring changes need to be made to have the A/C work?

Thanks this site has been a great for information with this swap

As I understand it, you've got three, maybe four options for a speed signal:

1. Add a two wire (one is ground) VSS at the back of your transfer case -- get the right drive and driven gear combo for your tire size and diff ratio and you're good to go. Hopefully your 4406 has those provisions

2. Graft in much of a 98 - 01 Expo ABS system electrics and accel sensor

3. Graft in a the GEM from a 2.5 liter Ranger

4. There are some GPS based systems that might tie into your current speedometer

I'm pretty sure on the '98/99 Rangers, the A/C is plug and play.

Same issue i had with my swap as far as the p0500 i got a 4406 with the speed sensor havent gotton around to wiring it up yet waiting on a day off thats not 100 with 100%humidity but the spedo should still work as it gets its signal from the rear end. I would look for a 4406 with the speed sensor and wire it to the pcm and let the rear end control the spedo for the ac i just roll the windows down

O and my 4406 came out of a 98 f250 to help your search for one with the speed sensor along

I was wondering if you could wire the rear end sensor in to the explorer speed sensor wire.

Just to let you know the fix so far was to take the VSS out of the awd transfer case on the Explorer and plug it in and zip tie it to the frame. No more check engine light. The A/C took a lot of rewiring to match the Explorer.

It shifts just like it did in the explorer.
