Lol. I used red hat before. Was thinking of a dual boot with windows 7 as primary, since Microsoft loves to be the main one and some version of Linux just to practice some stuff. I really got crap out of my Linux class at ITT Tech... Teacher knows his stuff but 27 people and all needing help... Ridiculous.
I just hate how made up the language is for things. You truly have to "learn" it.

Im trying to put windows 7 or ubuntu 11.12 on a Gateway laptop that is having problems. It fails to boot windows/system32/exe. I have tried so far to put win7 HP 64 bit and Ubuntu 11.12 64bit on it also with no luck from either USB or disk (yes I have gone into the bios to switch the boot order to what I am trying to boot from at the time).

Will try to put Ubuntu 11.12 32 bit on it and see what it does. All the owner want to be able to do with it is get on the internet and facebook.

You can run a Windows front end and a Linux kernel but I do not see the point in it.

I used to run a light weight linux on my old computer which was 7 years old and slowly dying. I built my computer now and I'm running a dual boot. Windows 7 and Ubuntu.

I know there is more than just us that run a Linux based system. Some people are just scared I guess.

I run Mint (Ubuntu variant) on my daughters old P4 dell. As a PC gamer Windows is a must for me.

You don't NEED to "pirate keys" on most Dell computers unless you are tryng to run a higher operating system than it was built for...

a Dell Built with XP (and version) will accept ANY Dell XP reinstallation disc and never ask you for a key and will activate automatically.

a Dell built for Vista will similarly accept any edition of Vista off of a DELL Reinstallation disc but will also accept Dell XP reinstalls.

Allegedly this works the same way with Dell machines built for Windows 7.

UPDATE: This DOES work for Dells that have Windows 7 as the OEM operating system.
Last week I reinstalled the OS on a Dell 1545 that originally came with windows 7 starter.
I took the time to "play with my various re-installation discs and discovered that
"OEM windows 7" enabled all versions of Windows 7 that I had available, both Home and Pro
I returned the computer with Home Premium 64-bit and they were thrilled.

IF you want to upgrade to a "Higher OS" XP-to-Vista Vista-win7 OR
if you want to see if an XP-toWin7 upgrade (Must be done Via Vista, but frankly a
clean Win7 install is easier) is possible you will need a code.

As for Linux, I recall reading recently that other than the 16% of computers
that run some variant of a MAC OS and the 80-odd percent of computers
running one of the various versions of Windows, Linux users (all of them combined) ammount to 3.something percent of all computer users.

It it my opinion that if Linux were so great more people would be using it.

Well for one I'd guess most people have never even heard of it. I really have nothing against it besides not being game friendly and would probably use it otherwise. It does take a bit more knowledge in my limited experience to go beyond just installing and using (which is all most people do with windows). Some of that could also be that I've used Windows (even DOS still has some relevance for command line commands) for so long it just seems easier to me.

Linux, while fun to play around with, has too many incompatibility issues with popular programs and web sites regardless of build.

One major concern is the inability to play DVDs. Getting some builds to even play Utube can be an exercise in frustration.

My server has run linux (Ubuntu Server with striped Gnome interface) since day one, and has been online for over 2 years, with only about 2 dozen restarts for major software updates.

I have dual-boot ubuntu on my desktop, but never really use it since BF3 and Solidworks will not run in Ubuntu

There is no Ubuntu "11.12". Ubuntu is ONLY yy.mm (year year.month month), and they ONLY get released April and October... therefore it can only be yy.04 or yy.10

I'm running Fedora Core on my media server and ubuntu on my PC. I dual boot Win7 on my PC so I can still play the few games that wine gives me a hard time about.
