I'm looking for a new project and recently I've come across a pretty good deal on a rust free 1961 Econoline pickup. The only problem is that it needs a new steering gear box. I have found a rebuilt one online the place wants $550 for the gearbox plus a $250 core charge. I was wondering if anybody could tell me the steering ratio so that i can buy a universal steering box and put that on instead.(these are much cheaper) Or i would appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction for a good deal on the correct gear box. Thanks.

Well, I found this site only because they have some info on the early Ranchero but they also cover the Econolines. They might be a good source for what you want. Good luck!

Take pictures/measurements of the original steering box where it bolts to the frame..........take pics of the extra room around the original steering box....

You could probably find a late-model steering box that would be in very good shape at a salvage yard for about $50 !!!!

Mount the "new" box onto the frame--make an adapter plate if needed.

Adapt the original steering rod to the input shaft of the "new" box.

Please contact Terry aka drecono (919) 271-2484 ASAP. I have several box's already pulled and curious which Indiana yard still has early Econo's!
