The clutches in my ranger are tearing themselves apart and it no longer will shift properly after 232,886 miles. I was wondering what other trannies I could put in it so I can get it back on the road. I heard that a 2.5 had the same bell housing I dont care if it is manual or automatic. thanks for the help

Clutches in an automatic transmission?
Yes, automatics have clutches. Direct clutch, coast clutch, intermediate clutch, etc.

does he mean the clutch packs?
I'm thinking he means that the friction discs are worn out. Not sure how that would be determined short of a full R+I on the trans.

Anyway, stick to your own year for autos. Any 4-cyl manual up to mid-2001 should be fine.

2001 and older 4 cylinders have a different bolt pattern from the Duratec (2002+) engines. You need a trans from a 2002+ 4 cylinder truck.

Yeah I know, but the truck in his profile is a 92, so I'm confused.
