just read on here for d35 ttb info... all you'll ever need is on TRS, trust me. plus it seems to be more reliable than the other RBV sites.. I read a lot of false info on ttb on RangerForum (not hating... just found some iffy info).

In comparison a jeep d30 is weaker than a ttb d35. And you will need a lot of money to make a d30 "good". A bronco d44 is the best bet however they are hard to find at junkyards. As mentioned above do some digging in the tech library, all the answers are there.

FYI e-lockers S U C K and really dont "lock". Your better off getting a Detroit Tru track. Its cheaper than a e-locker and is way more reliable.
what e locker are you referring too? the e locker needs some gentle engagement to seat the pins, but once seated its a spool. the elec-trac(sp?) i have heard of slippage. i look forward to an e locker for my front 60.

i find this incorrect...based on experience. higher powered d30 rigs over my hi powered d35 ranger in the same trails always left me the one fixing shit the most.

ultimately the d30 is a weak axle, but so is the d35 ttb ime. seems a matter which turd is smellier... the 27 spline shafts and side gears were killing me more then anything at the end...still tolerable though. i would not boot a d35 and replace it with a hp d30....but i would replace a d28 or convert a 2wd to 4x4 with a 30 on a reg use truck with 33-35 tires.

I've heard of d30 working just fine so I'm not discounting it altogether. However in situations where you see more abuse (rock crawling) the baby finger d30 u-joint typically breaks, or an axle shaft. I've only had my hub shatter (I have stock ones).

yes, technically it is weaker, but if you look at the specs on each, the difference isnt that great.....taken from the tech library:

Jeep Dana 30 Ford Ranger Dana 35
Ring Gear Diameter 7.20 Inches 7.56 Inches
Axle Shaft Diameter 1.16 Inches 1.16 Inches
Axle Shaft Spline Count 27 27
Pinion Shaft Diameter 1.38 Inches 1.41 Inches
Pinion Shaft Spline Count 26 26
U-joint 5-260x (up to 1995) or 5-297x (1995 up) 5-297x

major differences are the pinion shaft diameter and the ring gear diameter. both of which are not common fail points of the D30.

add to that the fact that you can almost walk into a grocery store and find parts for a D30, i dont think it's that bad of a swap. go on a jeep forum and count how many D30's are for sale for less than $100.

a solid axle is much easier to set up with larger tires than the TTB as well. no funky steering geometry and no TTB wear on the tires you just dropped $800 on.

lol, the good ole d30 vs d35 ttb stuff.

point is, either is effective for a dd/ww rig on 35's or smaller. sas is stupid simple once installed. ttb is bolt in basically but you gotta learn how ttb works. you don't have to have funky ttb steering. a modified superrunner or custom crossover setup will fix that. Legoms13 is the guy to talk to on steering for a TTB, I think he's made and customized every ttb steering system there is.
d30 parts are everywhere, no doubt... and a built d30 can handle 37's from a 4.0 powered TJ, I've seen it done, but he crawls stuff...not attacks it with skinny pedal..now he's building a d60.

i guess the point is; d35 vs d30 comes down to personal preference if you want to learn ttb or do the fab work for sas. I chose ttb b/c of the price. I found everything used and saved a good bit of money PLUS mine will never be on more than 33's and basic trails. so for me I think the d35 is the right choice. If I sas, it'll be d44 or larger.

I've seen a number of D30 R&P gear failures in my travels, where on D35s it's almost always just axle shafts, and an occasional spider gear on a stock carrier. Those minor differences in the ring gear & pinion shaft diameters are apparently enough to make a difference in what breaks first. I would much rather it be an (easily replaced) axle shaft than a gearset.

It should also be noted that most rigs that came with a D30 (Jeeps) are lighter up front than most RBVs are, any durability comparisons made with the axle(s) under different rigs are not likely to hold much water.

Any full-carrier-replacement locker or L/S diff will swap between Ford (TTB) and Jeep D35 axles. There are some internal differences within the stock diff carriers on certain years that can prevent swapping lunchbox-type lockers, however if you also swapped the carriers at the same time then they too can be swapped. The R&P gears are not swappable under any circumstances however.
