2001 RANGER fuel needle suck on full...

will not go down!
I tanked the truck, and its been stuck on full for the last 65 miles.
i even took the gauge cover off and poked the needle down with a stick, and it still climbs back to full.
i unplugged the unit on top of the tank and the needed went PAST full.

im gonna fill up a jerry can and see how far i can go until the tank goes dry, or it magically fixes itself....

so is it the gauge or the sending unit?
has anyone had this happen to them before? what was it?

Well, yes, it happened on my truck but not very often...only when I put 65 litres in...it was so happy to be full it stayed there for a week...

Ahem, sorry, true story though...

Probably the sending unit in the tank is sticking...I haven't seen any one posting this problem with the newer cluster types mostly because they are wired somewhat better than earlier years...the float sticking can be a problem on any year especially if someone pulled it out and managed to bend the arm that the float rides on...not that hard to do...

EDIT: Sorry again...the figures below are for the 2.5 liter engine...if you have the 3.0 or 4.0 or anything else it will vary considerably...same as tank size...so you can calculate based on the stock config engine estimated mpg and what you tank actually holds...

Carrying the extra gas is probably a good idea...your 2.5 should get around 300 miles on a tank (based on another recent post by someone with the same configuration...12 gallon tank @ 25 mpg)...as long as it is running right...so maybe reset the ODO if you haven't already so you can keep an eye on the ETE (estimated time empty)...

On 1989 and up Fords when you unplug the Sender wire the gauge should go up past Full
If you Ground that same wire, gauge should go below Empty.
16 Ohms Empty
158 Ohms Full

Grounded wire is 0 Ohms so below 16 Ohms
Disconnected wire is Infinite Ohms(Billion Gazillion Ohms, lol) so above 158 Ohms

If gauge reacts this way(you said yours did) then problem is in the Sender in the tank.
If you over fill tank you can cause float to stick, it should fall when fuel is lower and you hit a few bumps

Maybe take the tank off and tie some weights to the float so it sinks better...:)

Anyway...good to hear your on your way to a better appreciation of Ranger Quirks...I haven't owned one yet that doesn't have at least a dozen things that could work better...

You don't need a gas gauge.
