ok so i just replaced the upper and lower intake gaskets.

what i found is the intake had been off before and all lower intake bolts were only finger tight (probably reason for intake failed lower intake gasket)

problem is is previous owner must have been a monkey because these are not the first bolts Ive found to be finger tight (bell housing bolts also come to mind)

or could they have loosened up from vibration?

Its possible they came loose from vibration but unlikely. Unless they were not tightend down enough or you have a bad engine mount bushing causing vibrations or you motor is running bad with bad vibrations. I actually had a ranger that some bolts came loose on (valve cover bolts, exhaust manifold bolts, and tranny bolts) just because I had a bad oild.leak and motor mounts. The oil leak acts as lubricant and the vibrations just do what they do

if that was the case i could see a few working loose but not all and they were all about the same tightness... i have had to tighten the fuel tank straps trans rear mount front and rear bumpers. when i got it i had to tighten the lugnuts a wheel worked loose on the way home with it..

point is there is have been just way too many loose things on this truck LOL

hell even the bolts retaining the cat to the y pipe were loose..

and if i could count the bolts that were just plain missing ...

4.0l OHV had a common issue of lower intake bolts loosening up.

Can't speak about the rest of the bolts that were loose, maybe vehicle was assembled on a Friday before a long weekend, lol.

Physics and cars is a funny interaction. I have had bolts that were tight and should have stayed put come loose, and I have had bolts that were left loose and should have come out stay in.

My credo
to prevent Found On the Road Dead, Fix Or Repair Daily
Is this something I should be checking on the Rat's 4.0 ? It runs fine and doesnt use coolant.

My son bought a 95% complete project BMW 533i . It had 1000s of $ worth of new parts. The only trouble is they were all put on hand tight, tightened only to where the nylok would start the loose bolt spinning. Car goes great except for when parts fall off. :D
