Hey guys so i was starting to lay out my harnesses for the 2.9 to 4.0 swap and noticed that the big harness, the main engine bay harness has a 8pin circular plug and a 16 pin circular plug, but my engine harness for the actual engine has a 8pin circular plug and a 16 pin rectangular plug. I also noticed that my main engine bay harness doesnt seem to have a alternator plug or wire??? Im confused because i know for a fact i took the main engine harness out of a 1992 ford explorer with a 4.0L OHV and 5spd tranny. The engine im putting in is from a 1992 Ford Ranger 4.0L, could this be the issue is that im trying to mix a explorer harness with a ranger harness? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Post pics of your parts and then say specifically where each is from-what vehicle. That may help you get some responses. 92 ranger=92explorer for wiring purposes. Maybe a little late but it helps to label everything(every wire and connector to know where it goes and what it does before you start the swap and remove anything.)

The alternator harness on a 1989-92 (up to to 1994 on Explorer) is a separate harness
it is not part of the "main engine bay" harness

It's a little short thing with a fat wire running to a 3/8" diameter ring terminal,
At the point it reaches the ring terminal it is one (or two) grey wire about 3/16" in diameter. The field wires go to a small white circular four pin connector
