beater with no heater. I need some help.

Yesterday I had to turn the switch on and off a few times before the heater fan turned on. Today it didn't work at all. With temperatures averaging in the 20s lately some heat would be good. The fan has only had hi since I have owned the truck.

Any ideas on the fan not working? This is on a 87 ranger.

the resistor pack is a common failure point on these. i have also seen the wiring connector get hot and melt at the resistor, probably from a corroded connector. the resistor pack mounts inside the airbox, accessible under the hood on the passenger side of the firewall. pull the connector, take out the two screws , remove the resistor pack and inspect it. if it looks burnt/broken, replace it. also inspect the wiring while youre there and clean out any debris from inside the airbox.

So I'm assuming this thing that is packed full of leaves is my resistor? I should mention that I pretty much destroyed the plug getting it off because it was rusted onto the resistor.

And the fact that this box is packed full of leaves is why the fan always sounded like a mulcher.

So I have 2 questions,

First what do these plugs go to? The yellow came off the resistor, but what are the other 2? They weren't plugged into anything.

Second, can I bypass the factory resistor setup? And just put a12 volt switch in the dash for it?

Any help would be great. Thanks.

damn dirty ape chipmunks.

i would try to find the repair harness and a fresh resistor.

but to get by i would run a 30 amp relay with power right to the motor. power and ground it right off a relay.

if it spins right up, good. but the motor may be cashed and the resistance is getting high and a few taps on it may get it going.. and corrosion in the plug that grew it together is an indicator of that. so you may need a new blower motor along with a pig tail.

The high position is 12V right to the motor, with the resistor cut out of the circuit completely.

Those other two plugs are for the EEC diagnostics. The red one is the actual diagnostic port, and the little one-wire job is just 12V to power up the tester.

So to wire the fan motor up to a switch, could I just do that? Run power and ground to the fan with a switch in the dash and the fan will run on high? And if so, would it be ok to leave it this way?

i would till you get the parts in.

not sure which connector you have, but just a power and ground....

due to the load, i would hook the switch to a relay, but to get by, a fused setup right to it will work. it is just a dc motor....

Well apparently these parts are dirt cheap. So I Guess my question now is, how do I get the leaves out of the box and keep any future leaves from getting in?

i pull the blower motor out, and the wiper arm access covers as well...but my pickup is snorkled so its real easy to access it.

I'm just wondering why does the resistor have to go in the box heater box? What's the point of this?

The resistor gets hot, the airflow helps to keep it cool. There's no way I know of to prevent leaves getting in there, it's a normal service thing to remove them once in a while.

Is there any risk of fire if I don't get them all out? How hot does that resistor get? I mean I know it hasn't burned up yet but, it's a little concerning.

You also run the risk of burning out another resistor pack if you don't get all the leaves. That's what kills em in the first place, they don't get the airflow they need and they overheat.
