I'm almost ready to buy a set of new rims for my 1990 Ranger Super Cab 2WD. I'm getting 15" size rims (stock for my 2WD is 14"). The tires I will be buying are Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor 235/75R15.

Should I get a 7" wide rim or an 8" wide rim? Will a 15x8" rim work OK or will the tires rub?

Thanks!

Aoresteen:

If you get the correct backspacing, there is no difference on tires rubbing.

15x8 backspacing ~4.5"; 15x7 backspacing ~4.0".

I would go with 15x7s because I have 3 sets of those rims in the garage. (And it is in middle of range recommended for 235/75 tires).

Unless you are planning to go wider than a 10.5"(265 mm) tire, there is no need to have wheels wider than 7". If you just want 8" wheels, they should work fine with the proper back spacing as Don indicated.

What "look" do you want? if you want the NASCAR look with extreme bulging sidewalls, go with narrower rims. If you want a more "sporting" look and better cornering, go with wider ones. Only problem is if the rim bead edge protrudes beyond the tire, it's easier to damage.

Thanks all! I spoke with Goodyear about their Wrangler Silent Armor 235/75R15 and they said that they fit 6" to 8" rims. All their measurements are take on a 6.5" rim. I went with 7" rims as it is smack in the middle as Don said.

New tires and rims are on my 1990 Ranger! I went with KMC XD1227 Enduro rims:

http://www.kmcwheels.com/wheels/XD122/XD1227

This rim was one of the few 15" rims in all black with the proper back space for a Ranger (3.75" backspace, offset -6mm) & the 5x4.5 lug bolt size that I was able to find.

and Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armour 235/75R15 tires:

https://www.goodyear.com/en-US/tires/wrangler-silentarmor

My Ranger had 14" rims with a mish-mash of P215/70R14 tires:

With the new rims & tires they look like this (Ranger is stock with no lift):

Note the new rear black bumper. Old chrome one was bent & bashed to hell.

Test drive was smooth and much improved from the old junk tires.

Thanks all the help!

Do your front tires rub with that setup on a hard turn?

Sorry for the late post. For folks who might find this via Google the answer is no BUT,

Going over hard bumps the driver side tire did rub. Passenger side seemed to be fine.

Solution was a 4" suspension lift.
