just posting as a public service for everyone else. swapping from a non-tach cluster to a tach cluster from an explorer doesnt keep the check engine light unless you repin the cluster terminals. I didnt really want to get into it so I just bided my time and waited for a same year ranger (mine is a 96 with the two prong temp sensor...I needed a 96 ranger tach cluster or an early 95/96 explorer cluster that uses the same two prong temp sensor.
finally got a high optioned 96 ranger in the u-pull with the tach cluster. snagged it and tossed it in and now my check engine light works perfect as does the temperature gauge and everything else.
