That was the thing that made my dad so mad about his constant 4x4 issues on that truck. He held out for something with a manual transmission and manual t-case because he didn't want to have to deal with issues related to automatic or electronically controlled systems. He still had them.

So now I am super stoked again. When I went to look at it it was raining. I poked my head under and looked and thought the trans was a 4R70. Today I got to thinking that would be kind of odd given the heavy-duty-ness of the rest of the power train. Looked under a little closer tonight when the wife got home. It is a 4R100. :yahoo:

My credo
If you can't go through it or around it, then go over it.
I thought all the 5.4l expeditions had the 4r100?

Probably. Like I said, I just assumed it was a 4R70 from a quick glance in a field after 2 days of rain. But standard equipment was a 4.6, a 4R70, and an 8.8 rear, so with knowing this had a 5.4 and a 9.75 the 4R70 seemed out of place, which is why I looked again.

The reason I made said assumption is because the 4R70 was used behind 5.4 3Vs and in the F-150 and Expeditions for years betwen 04 and 08.

I do know the 5.8 only ever got the E4OD/4R100 rather than the AODE/4R70.

They were kinda stingy giving out 4R100's in the F-150's. In the trucks if you have a 5.4 you also have a 9.75 no matter what (unless you got the 250LD/7700)

Most (mine included) had the 4R70W.

3V 5.4's didn't have a 4R70W, they had a 4R75E. 2V 4.6's in the '04+ trucks had the 4R70E.

Functionally the same transmission. Just minor internal differences.

You'll like that rig with the kids and all. Mine just crossed 200k and still running strong. Past the days of hauling school kids but it's a great rig towing my 20' fishing boat! Swapped out the air suspension to coils and changed the heater core (ugh- cursed some engineers on that one). Only regret is not having the opening rear vents option. Enjoy that big ride!

Be ready to do a rear coil swap, I get a boat load of calls for the coils.

Yeah, so far we are loving it. It is going to need an engine at some point, as it has a bit of rod knock, but it isn't bad yet, and I've seen these 2V engines go like that for +50K. It's not like the 3V VCT engines where a little knock means it is going to blow soon. I'll probably push it through this year and get a JY engine to rebuild next summer.

We took it bout 800 miles last weekend, to Erie and then to Cleavland and back, ran great, got 16 MPG the whole way, which is better than I expected.

The last big thing it needs is tires, the ones on it are shot. I scored a set of 3/4 tread Cooper Discover AT/3s from CL last week for $200. Gonna put them on Saturday, one of the guys I work with now, his dad has a little two bay shop with tire stuff that he is letting me use to do the tires
