Check any battery with volt meter
12.2v or lower is a failing battery
If battery starts to lose volts just by having meter connected it is a bad battery
Car batteries are not made to be drained below 12v, they have thin plates so they can discharge high AMPs, for starter motor, quickly, and then take a quick reCharge above 14volts
When they sit with a slow drain, i.e. hooked up to vehicle, over 6 months or so, they will be ruined, won't hold a recharge very long
Just sitting not hooked up is OK for a few years but really depends on how old they were when they were "put away", if they were already over 3 years old then they probably won't recover that well, the chemicals in the battery fluid do deteriorate over time
Deep Cycle batteries are made with thicker plates inside so can take a long steady drain and then a long steady recharge.
Used in RV and Marine applications, they can be used to start engines, but not as good at releasing the higher AMPs quickly, especially in colder temps
