I have a 1994 ranger m5od I use it to plow “my first year though” it’s only for my driveway but it over heats “grinds into reverse but stops after cools down” and has brand new clutch what fluid it has mercon atf but I heard 80w90 eats sycros will redline mtl work it has 210k so if that’ll help I wanna know I don’t want to junk it either because the engine still is good and the frame is good”for a old ranger”. Thanks if anyone can help

'94 M5OD uses Mercon ATF (a.k.a "Dex/Merc").

Don't use gear oil in an M5OD. It is too thick to get into some of the smaller places that need lubed, like the pocket bearing. Also, any GL5 or 6 spec gear oil will eat brass parts like synchronizers.

Yea but I want something a little heavier
As adsm said, heavier fluids are likely to lead to multiple issues (and will hurt your fuel economy too).

I put Royal Purple Synchromax fluid in my BII's M5OD some years ago... If you need something above normal Dex/Merc ATF, then that would be my recommendation.

That's the one I was trying to remember. I have been wracking my brain for a few days now trying to remember what that stuff was.

Glad to help you recover your thought. :D

Stuff's a bit expensive ($15/qt, I think I paid), but on a 30K mile schedule @ 5K/year, it's not so hard to absorb. Since putting it in I've noticed the truck seems to haul itself up grades a very slight bit easier in 5th gear (I think also an extra 0.5-1 MPG was gained as well, which would make sense since synthetic fluids are supposed to reduce friction to some extent).
