I posted on here awhile ago asking for help figuring out a problem I was having with front seal blowouts on my 88 ranger with an A4LD trans. After further searching I found out its more than likely problems with my bellhousing. So far I have come up empty searching for a bellhousing for an A4LD... I have however found a bellhousing for a 5R55E transmission and from what I can understand it will bolt to my 2.9L engine, I just dont know if it will bolt to my A4LD transmission. If anyone could give me info on this it would be helpful. Thanks.

Just so you are clear, the bell housing of an automatic transmission is part of the front pump(main pump) assembly, so to replace the bell housing requires full tear down and rebuild.

I would doubt the A4LD and 5R55E have the same front pump so bell housing is probably not the same on the back side, but do not know that for sure.

Yes, 5R55E from a 4.0l OHV or SOHC would fit on a 2.9l block

Good info, had not read that, but 5R won't work with A4LD starter motor.
First I wanted to find a solution to the front seal lubrication issue. I found that the A4 and the 4R bellhousings were the same except for a different design for the lubrication of the front bushing, an extra pump bolthole, and one elongated hole feeding the case. The 5R bellhousing was the same as the 4R, except the pocket for the starter was shaped differently (which makes sense because it was behind a different motor). So, if I wanted to have the updated way of lubricating the front bushing and seal, and keep the standard starter setup and bolt pattern, a 4R bellhousing was a must.
The 4R looks to be a good choice as an A4LD upgrade bellhousing
