Hi I'm wandering if anyone has swapped a 4.6l v8 into their 1st gen explorer? Or if it's possible to put the 1st gen body onto a 3rd Gen frame?

Think trying to drop a 1st gen body on a 3rd gen frame would stand the best chance of success.

Even then, things like a/c, brakes, steering and the radiator are going to be sorely pressed for space.

Compared to any engine Ford ever installed in the 1st gens, the 4.6 is huge, nearly double the width and half again as long as the 4.0 ohv V6.

I saw a thread here with a blown 6.8 in a gen 1. It involved cutting things and a body lift. That is all I remember.

I don't think length will be such a big deal so much as width, even a 2v is wider than a 460. 3v and 4v are wider yet.

All have been done in Rangers though so it is possible. Search around on here. I think it was GregR that had a 4v in his third gen Ranger.
