the a/c pump on my 89 ranger is shot and i just want to take it off. There are 3 belts that come off the crankshaft. 1 for power steering, 1 for alternater, and 1 for a/c pump. Im wondering if i remove the ac pump and the belt whether or not the other 2 belts will turn the water pump without problem. All 3 belts come off the crankshaft, go around the water pump, and then to there final location. Will the power steering belt and alternater belt be able to power my water pump without the 3rd belt?

It's been a while since I looked at a 2.9, but you should be fine. I think my buddies non-a/c Ranger has the 3 grooves and only uses two. Hell, just take the belt off and drive it for a few days and see how it acts.

The non-A/C 2.9s had the same setup as the A/C ones, just minus a belt. Really, if you wanted to, you could also remove the power steering belt and run it all day without worrying about overheating issues.

Keep in mind, that since all 3 belts are driven by the same pulley they don't really transfer any more power to the water pump than would a single one. It's just convenient to run them all past the pump for redundancy.
