have 03 sport trac 4.0 sohc, 8th digit E, which a lot of rangers, explorers, and sport tracs have in them. What I would like to know is, what are my options for engine swaps\replacement ( my timing chain turned loose at 70MPH on interstate. (Scrrambled eggs and oil) any help I would be very grateful for.

Thanks

Any 4.0 SOHC will fit. Depending on year/model it came from you may have to swap intake, valve cover, exhaust manifolds, filter adapter (or just use the larger FL-1A filter) and install a freeze plug. Nothing strenuous.

Keeping with a 4.0 SOHC would certainly be easiest but given you've asked in the V8 Swap section....

Depending on state emissions laws a V8 may not be practical.

If you must maintain same year or newer engine/PCM as the vehicle, you're largely stuck with the 4.0. Your ST is based on the 2nd gen Explorer and a 3rd gen Expo V8 is a very very difficult fit.

But, if allowed, a '96 - '01 Expo/Mounty V8 is just about a drop in swap. There will be electrical challenges to overcome, but those have all been encountered and largely documented with solutions.

Base power between the 4.0 SOHC and 5.0 sbf is very similar but costs are not. A good running V8 Expo complete is no more expensive than a used 4.0 engine and lacks the 4.0's rather fragile cam timing system.

Not everyone's cup 'o tea but would be an easy decision for me.
