hi, i'm Eugene. i'm new to this forum. i have a 1995 ford ranger 2.3L. my timing belt broke, i've taken everything off except the harmonic balancer. i don't see any holes to bolt the puller to, don't want to use a gear puller for fear of tearing the rubber to pieces. is there some trick to getting this thing off? i know i must sound like a complete idiot, but at this point thats the least of my worries. i could really use some help, and don't worry about hurting my feelings by having a ( what you consider simple ) trick for removing this thing.

What does that balancer look like? The one on my turbocoupe (2.3) has some holes in the center, but they're sideways and not threaded. I made some j-hooks (or buy premade ones) hook them through the holes and use a steering wheel puller

You might need to use a bearing puller on that style, just make sure you grab the center portion of the balancer...

You need to put the crank bolt in and thread it two turns. Then get use a pulley puller. Place on the crank bolt. The hole that the bolt goes in. Is only big enough for that bolt. I snapped my balancer trying take it off. So use the crank bolt to push and pull off of.

Thanks for all the info guys. Got it put back together but it must have bent a valve when it broke, so looks like it's time for a new engine.

its a non-interference engine. what makes you think you bent a valve?

X2, even if you bent a valve, just pop the head off and fix the valve...

I checked the timing marks, they're where they're supposed to be. The motor spins too easily. The last time I heard one spin that fast and easy, it had bent valves.

The motor has 150,000 miles on it, just fixing the head would be asking for trouble down the road. I've always heard " you don't fix the top without fixing the bottom."

Feeling like such an idiot right now. Didn't know there was two marks on the cam and oil pump sprockets. Used the right marks and it cranked right up.
