The spring kit on my rear drums from autozone pretty much exploded in my rear end. This is the second time this has happened, the first time the self adjuster broke off and caused little damage, and was easily fixed by swapping out my drums for new ones under warranty. However, this time the spring kit that broke ate into my axle shaft seals and I have to replace them.

Do any of you guys have a good video or know of one, or any tips for removing the axles and seals from a Ford 8.8?

Thanks!

Remove the drums, take the cover off, and then remove the Jesus bolt and King pin. Then, without turning things, push the axle shafts inward, one at a time, and remove the C-clips. Then the axle just pulls out. The seals are pretty easy, I use a seal puller, or a chisel on stubborn ones. I've seen some guys use the axle shaft itself to pop the seals out, but I've never gotten the hang of that trick.

To reinstall the seals just set them in the tube, put a piece of wood over them, and beat it in with a hammer.

What are those two bolts exactly?
I've never taken apart a rear end before.

There is only one small headed bolt that holds in the cross shaft and I believe it is either a 5/16" or 3/8" wrench or socket to take out the retaining bolt and then the 7/8" or 1" diameter cross shaft will slide right out and then you can push in the axle shafts to remove the C shaped retaining rings so you can pull out your axles. It is really a easy job and once you don it you will see.

And replace the cross pin bolt, don't reuse it.

I have a new cross pin bolt and new c clips already, along with 3 quarts Valvoline SynPower 75w-140, two timken seals and I'm going to need all of the brake springs and self adjusters and such. I do not want to buy the AutoZone ones again, are there any other better brands? Or should I suck it up and pay the 65$ for the Ford OEM ones.

Would a 8.8 from an 03 Ranger with a 4.10 t lok fit my ranger?
I was thinking the VSS being in the rear end might mess something up.

Turns out I had a 7.5" and my door tag was wrong, or I looked something up wrong originally. However, I pulled out the axles yesterday they both looked good, I replaced both oil seals and both bearings. All with National brand bearings and seals, hopefully they last a while. This was a pretty simple job to do with basic tools.
As for the brakes, I am replacing all of the brake hardware and wheel cylinders with Raybestos parts. They're in the mail right now.
