Well then...hmm...maybe I will get a 4406 and front shaft from a F150 and use the short shaft from the back of one and see what happens. I am tempted to not even put on the AWD t-case

All 9.75" axles are metrc, which is about a 1/16" larger than the standard pattern. You can take a 9.75" rotor, drill it out to 9/16", and it'll fit the 5x5.5 ford pattern...

I was on driveshaft flanges, I know the wheels are metric.

I have had mine for almost 9 years, I figured the wheels out fairly quick. :icon_thumby:

Apologies for the thread necro, but it's on topic I swear...

Does anybody know where to source measurements for a 4.6 F150 front driveshaft? I was handed a 97-03 F150 front shaft the other day but I don't know if it's the right length. It appears to be about 38" yoke to yoke.

I had one in my 2000 explorer before I started my SAS on it. I'll see if I can find it laying around somewhere and grab a measurement.

That would be great, thanks!

I did just realize that Rockauto lists the length in the specs of their shafts. Looks like 22" weld to weld on the 4R70W trucks (4.2 or 4.6) and 21" for 4R100 (4.6 or 5.4). From the picture I took the other night, mine appears to be more like 25" so who knows what it's out of...

Mine measures 21" weld to weld, 33" center of cap to center of cap as it runs in the truck.

It has an extension thing to it, not sure how far it goes since nothing really moves aside from the t-case wiggling around.

2002 5.4 with a 4R70W, I would think it is the same as a 4.6.

Crap. Guess that confirms that the shaft wasn't a win. Failed on the transfer case as well, actually. Ended up with the 4406 from an Expedition with Control Trac instead of the F150 version. At least the price was right, I should be able to sell it for what I got into it without too much trouble.

Too long is better than too short, I think they only clipped me $50 to shorten the one in my Ranger. But if the crosses/flanges are wrong that kinda messes it up too.

I'm not in a rush, just accumulating parts right now. With a little luck I'll find a transfer case and driveshafts cheap over the next few months and then really search for a donor vehicle in the spring. In the mean time there's plenty of small stuff to do on the truck like a 1" body lift, contour fan, etc to pave the way for the swap.

It isn't like yards are not chock full of 97-03's either...

Mine measures 32in from center of cap to center of cap as it sits from my 4406 transfer case to front diff. That's close to all the way compressed.

Thanks for that. I'm supposed to be picking up a manual case with linkage and boot plus both shafts from a 4. 6 4R70W tomorrow. Will be sure to post measurements for comparison.

I'll take more careful measurements later, but at first glance this morning when I pulled the front shaft into the garage, it was nearly 23" weld to weld. I didn't visually confirm the engine and trans when I pulled the 4406 off the back, but the owner indicated it was a 4.6/4R70W, and I took it off myself.

Separate question... For anybody that's installed a manual shift 4406 into an electric shift Ranger, what did you do about the dash switch? I looked online for a bezel that didn't have the control, but the only ones I found also don't have the fog light switch that I need (and they start at about $60, which is insane for an 18 year old piece of molded plastic).

The dash bezel for a AWD explorer like mine should swap in but it will also have the button for the rear wiper...

I didn't measure jack when I put my 4406 in my Explorer, just did the looking and bought a 4.6L front shaft (was expedition) and a rear shaft out of a 5.4L Expedition. I don't know how much transfers to Ranger swaps, I do know that the front shaft is as long as it can be, it's fully compressed and the rear shaft is about 1/2" out from where it was in the donor vehicle... Other than most likely having a bad CV up front it works like a charm in the twice I've used 4x4...
