Frame Paint??

hey guys,

Got my whole rear end pretty much stripped. Now before I put it all back together I would like to pretty up the frame.

What has everyone done and used? I have seen them on build threads but still not sure.

Grind it right down to bare metal? or clean it up and paint it?

What kind of paint?

if it were me, i'd get off all rust flakes, oil, grease, and mud. then i'd prep it really good (per instructions) and use POR15 or something similar on it. should keep away rust for years and years. any part of the frame that would be exposed to light would need to be painted or coated as it does degrade in uv light.
POR is NOT cheap, but it does work. it makes a very hard coating on rusty metal, so any holes you need to drill or welding you need to do, do it first!
bed liner might be another option, but i don't know anyone who has done it on their frame.
the typical rubber spray on coatings work, but you have to do it just about every year if you get lots of snow, salty roads, or live near the ocean.

Rustoleum. Just did mine, was impressed with it. Brushed it on. Also did the underside of my bed while I had it off.

I had mine sand blasted...then epoxy sealer...rust paint and then rubber guard on the outside of the rails and most places that are in the direct line of fire from stones and other road debris...

Most important is to let it bake if you can...I sun roasted mine...best I could do at the time...

i steam cleaned mine and used a rubberized undercoating.. the one for the air gun. good stuff. about 3-4 years so far and nothing bad from me.. i like it.

Well, I talked to a guy today about sand blasting it. Said it cost
Me under 300. That's the entire frame behind cab, out sides of the rest of the truck. Maybe even the rear diff? Than just spray under coat it myself! Hmm.. Ideas ideas

I did mine but I didn't clean up frame first. Good for 1 winter lol. Long as u prep frame correctly to help rubberized undercoating stick, you'll be fine.

sand blast then a nice powder coat so it doesnt rust off

powder coating doesn't last that long where i live. rust gets to it about as fast as just priming and painting. could be the winters here, idk. for me, it would not be worth the extra money.

powder coating is over rated.... if it ever gets cracked it holds water under it and rusts..

undercoating is the way to go. but sandblasting? is that needed? is it really rusted?

Way overhyped IMO.

One little scratch or dink and the rust spreads like crazy under the powdercoat. What hasn't been compromised is really hard to get off, a sandblaster just dents it and paint remover won't touch it.

I agree with strvger, if you want it to last you should spend the extra money and go with POR. I helped my old man do the frame on his IH Scout with it about 3 years ago and the frame still looks great even after the bad road salts.

Sorry to bump such an old thread but I think it is better than starting a new one. Has anyone used the Steel-It coating?!?!? It is a polyurethane with stainless steel flakes. Supposed to be rust proof, durable and able to weld through. I also saw rustoleum has a similar product called Steel-Tech for a fraction of the price. Just didnt see if you could weld through the rustoleum like you can the Steel-It.

Im looking to coat my frame but dont want to remove a thick rubber/epoxy coating everytime i need to weld to it.
