Hey everyone, I'm looking to do the 5.0 swap an my 94 ranger. Currently 4.0L auto 4x4. I've read that certain years of 5.0's can be more simple than others to swap. Hoping to get some advice as to which year is the least hassle.

I've tracked down a 96 5.0 auto explorer, complete minus rear axle and drive shaft, a guy is parting out. Still together and can hear it run before making a deal. My concern is its a distributor less ignition. Will that complicate things? Thanks for any advice in advance. Much appreciated.

Nope, the complete Expo EFI system really only needs about 6 wires between the OEM Expo harness and the Ranger harness to light off and do it's thing and three of those are for the fuel pump relay.

The coil pack ignition is far better than the distributor type, as is the sequential fuel injection.

As a bonus, the '96/97 systems don't have PATS security to muck around with and make a great doner.

How about wiring to keep dash gauges all functional?

Nice, you already have the 8.8 rear, carb is easier IMO

I've considered going to carb, but would love to keep EFI. Carb options are everywhere. I have the shortest commut to work that I've ever had, but it'll be hunting rig and there's alway a decent drive, so better mog would be nice.

The only thing wrong with the distributorless ignition is I'm not smart enough to figure out new electronics, and since it doesn't look as simple as a distributor, I don't like it. They seem to be reliable enough though, I hear they have 6 wires that go to the computer to run them. If you have a manual/wiring diagrams it shouldn't be a big deal to hook up.

Well, time to revive this thread. After diagnosing my 4.0l with a burnt valve, I've been searching for a set of good heads to freshen up then replace mine.

After tracking down a set with 170k, the owner notifies me that he has a complete running 96 5.0 explorer for $600.

Now my dilemma on what to do.

Buy heads, gaskets, bolts and miscellaneous stuff.
Heads-$100
Gasket set-$125+/-
Bolts-$40-$50
And possible machining needed.

OR

Buy complete running explorer for $600 and part out what I don't need.

What are the potential items that will need to be purchased outside of using everything I can use from the expo?
