I bought an oem Ford shop manual for the rig, something I do for
every vehicle I own cuz I do just about all my own wrenching -
even auto trans, diff's, efi (EEC-IV), etc.

The temp gauge never goes above the bottom line in the operating range -
didn't when I drove it home, and still doesn't after a very thorough flushing
of the engine and a new radiator & 192 T-stat.

The prev owner hadn't maintained the vehicle hardly at all, and had put some
stop-leak in the system and it was full of "crud" and horribly rusty. So found
a new radiator for $65. The t-stat housing was even corroded on the upper
radiator hose end and on the heater hose end so bad I didn't trust it.
Found a cheap replacement. The T-stat in it was stuck open from all the
crud so figured it'd maybe warm up properly after getting well cleaned and
a new t-stat.

Nope. Even after 20 miles of town driving, it now doesn't even quite get up
to the bottom line on the operting range, altho the upper radiator hose is
quite hot. So thought about a new temp sender, or a separate gauge.

My oem Ford shop manual says there's 2 sensors (one for the efi system,
the other for the gauges) just above the T-stat, looks like in the housing.

But there aren't any sensors there at all. There is 1 in the heater hose
about a foot away from the engine, but I can't see any other temp sender
anywhere.

Should logically be around the top front of the engine.

Can anyone steer me in the right direction? I want to make sure the engine
is running warm enuf to adequately lube the lower cyl walls etc etc.

Thanks much!

Seems like someone else had the same problem with the gauge - took the time to find it then posted a little video clip on You Tube.

No WONDER I couldn't find them! Typical Ford - bury things so you can hardly see them let alone get at them.

The temp sensor for the engine management is directly below and behind the intake manifold. Green and black wires going to it.

The temp sender for the gauge is near the rear of the block on the driver side, just a few inches up and back from the oil filter. Single wire.

Maybe I'll try a new gauge sender first.

I have a 2.3 out of a t-bird and it is under the intake on the back of the head. I used a direct guage w/ the long tube and probe. I remember it was a bitch to get to . it was worth it cause it reads the same as a thermometer in the rad now. worth the work.

I try not to fight with the difficult to access things any more -

I cut a hole in the inner fender just big enuf to stick my fist thru
and used a long extension and breaker to get it loose, then just
reached straight in (after removing the tire) and took it out.

I'll use a dab of super glue and/or a couple sheet metal screws
and overlap the piece I cut out a little and patch it back together.
Just plastic anyway.

I'm too old to stand on my head and don't have 13 U-joints in my
hands and arms any more.
