Hey TRS'ers,

The odometer and trip meter in 96 Ranger just up
and decided they were tired. Both completely quit.
The speedometer is still working fine.

What is it in the speedo that causes this and how
much trouble is it to fix?? Got to be cheaper than
replacing the whole thing.(I hope)

Check the Tech Library. There is a nice write up on how to replace the motor. If you ask me, it's not worth the trouble. My truck already has over 200K (204,100 in my count). I fixed the problem once, but only for it to give out again a year later. If you really want to fix it, it doesn't seem hard to do. If you buy a new cluster, you would still have to transfer your existing miles, so just save yourself the money and look for a motor.

Hey oldjohnny,

If I could lay my hands on another cluster would
just swap it out. Don't have the $$$ to go hunting
for one.
You say motor, could it be a gear or some other
little flimsy parts just broke?

Did a quick search on the web and saw places wanting
to sell repair manuals for this problem(?). Did not mention
how much parts would cost. One joker even claimed to
have a shop for fixin' speedometers. Wanted way too
much for such a simple thing.

OK.
Checked out odometer repair in the tech lib.
Good article. Pretty much answers all my questions.
Just have to hunt down another speedometer now.
Thanx
