I have anked a number of people, who I figured that would be in the know and I get different answers.
Q - Do you need to use a special oil filter for synthetic oil?
Canadian tire does sell a FRAM Ultra Synthetic Oil Filter but can you not just use a reguarl filter.

I went out and pick a number of filters a while ago and I normally use Conventional Motor Oil, so now I was thinking of putting in Synthetic or a semi-synthetic but I still have 4 filters left.

ScubaDive:

I used synthetic oil long before there were specific synthetic oil filters.

So, the basic answer is "Yes, you can use conventional filter with synthetic oil".

Is there an advantage to using a Synthetic filter - yes, when you are seeing 10k mile oil change intervals. But my old Ranger doesn't get enough driving to warrant that; and cost isn't worth it when doing 'annual' oil change..

my $0.02...

Depends how anal you want to be.

Filters measure in micron filtration, a finer media filter will filter out smaller crud particles. If the filter is a better filter it will need to have a larger surface area to reduce the pressure drop across it.

Because of my low mileage I do once per year oil changes with synthetic (about 6K miles), but do a six month filter only change. I could run more miles on the oil though.

Best way to know what's in your oil is with used oil analysis. Then you'll really start loosing sleep. :>)

Ok, so really as for the oil filters one would buy a Canadian Tire (general parts store) a filter is a filter.... Now on a side note, does one have do some kind of a oil flush going from Conventional to synthetic or semi-synthetic?
Rearanger I noticed that in your footer you have a Dual by-pass oil filter system, I was wondering if you ever posted any pics of your system? I searched the system and am not sure how you would get everything to fit under the hood.

Dual by-pass won't fit under hood. Mine is just behind front bumper with adapter and oil lines to engine filter adapter mount.

I keep my vehicles a long time so this system may pay off. If you typically turn your truck over every five years or so this system won't pay off. You also have to know I'm a little anal in engine maintainance - not for everyone.

I did not do a DIY, so you'll just have to figure it out. I had custom oil lines made at a hydraulics shop to fit this system with flare fittings.

If it's not for you then synthetic or synthetic blend with good filter will do very well to protect your engine. As well the Amsoil By-pass filter is about $35 that I change once per year and the other filter is usually PureOne changed every 6 months.

Hope this helps.
