99 ranger 3.0l flex fuel engine with bad heads.

question is how interchangeable are the heads with a standard 3.0l say from a Taurus?

never done it but heard it could be done

No problems have ever been reported using gas only heads on flex fuel engine, but I also assume most have been using gas only, if you will be running E-85 often then I would get Flex fuel heads.
Flex fuel heads had smaller domes, 47cc vs 49cc(gas only), because methanol burns slower and releases less energy that gasoline.
It wouldn't hurt anything to run E-85 in 49cc head, power difference might be more noticeable, might being the key word.

Your '99 probably has longer head bolts, that was the year they changed the block design to use those longer bolts.
Heads were also redesigned in that year, they changed from 8mm valves to 7mm valves, you can use either, but I would see if you can find '98 or older just because the new design did have exhaust valve seat issues in the early years, 2007 and later would be OK to use.
And use Ranger(RWD) 3.0l head gaskets, Taurus(FWD) gaskets had different coolant flow design for transverse mount.

Good read here on this and other 3.0l info: http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/3_0-build.shtml

You can run either cylinder head. The early flex fuel engines had a different combustion chamber than the gas heads, but they eventually phased those out and used the same heads for both gas and flex engines.
