What kind of gas mileage should i be getting? I have a 86 BII 2.9 4x4 it runs good no missing out or anything like that but my gas mileage sucks i can fill it up & i get around 275 miles to the tank. I was looking in the book it said its got a 23 gallon tank. I figured it to be getting roughly 7.5 miles to the gallon. where do i start? like i said it runs good smooth idle im stumped.

id grab a prius motor and do the swap. should put you at around 30-40 MPG. though your RWD MAY not work...

your a bit low. do a tune up. those trucks get like 12-15 mpg. anybody saying higher isnt doing their math right.

Are you running it dry, if you are running it dry and you are getting 275 miles, that would equal almost 12 mpg.

bronco 2....properly running should get 18-23 with stock gears and tires....no less then 16 town unless extended idling is involved.

For anybody who doesn' know the easiest way to measure your milage is to fill your vehicle until it clicks once then stop filling and reset your tripmeter and then drive until your tank is 3/4 -1/4 the lower it is the more accurate you get a better average.then fill to the first click and take the number of gals to the tenths and divide your miles by that number and that will give you your MPG.

To accurately test it go to the same station same pump and fill it to the first click and write down the miles and gallons. do that three times divide the gallons into miles and average it out between the three. + 1 on the complete tune up including wires and PCV if you dont know how old they are then do the same mileage test after the tune up. It all depends on how you use the skinny pedal try and be consistent. Synthetic oil can also possibly improve gas mileage with a motorcraft oil filter.

My 87 has been getting around 18 mpgs. Now heres MY issue. It's a 23 gal tank right? I typicaly fill up around or just below 1/4 tank. This is in the neighbor hood of 180-200 miles. When I fill up, it gets around 12 or so gallons to fill.

12 gallons should be half the tank, not below 1/4.
I installed a new sending unit and intank pump last fall, and this did not change, and I did test the range on the sending unit before I installed it.

Does the sending unit when in the empty position only hang in the middle of, or slightly below, the 23 gal tank?
I had a 85 bBII with a 2.8 that the gauge didn't work, so I filled it up and then ran it till dry once to figure it's mileage, then zeroed the trip-ometer when I would fill it from then on. It seems like it got nearly 400 Miles to a tank, and I would fill it somewhere around 375 miles.

I think something is screwwy with our sending unit lengths.

I typically get 15 mpg on my 88 BII, 2.9L, A4LD, 4.10 diff.
I figure I am actually getting just over 16 mpg as the odometer is off by 10% due to tire size change. (running 235/75R-15).

i get around 16-18 city with mine.its a 90 4x4 with 3.73's and 31' tires. that being said, my gauge is off also. it says about 1/4 tank but i fill to the click and its usually about 13-14 gallons. i dont worry about it though, i just drive the thing like 1/4 tank is empty so i dont have to worry about running out

Well, my fuel mileage in my 86 Automatic BII that is stock is about 15 mpg and I usually only drive city. My fuel gauge also only works untill about half a tank. When my gas gauge reads on E I fill up and get about 12 Gallons. So I just treat it as the gauge works fine and I am never under half a tank.
