I just got a 1992 Ranger XLT 2WD and I'm having trouble with it shifting into Reverse, when I try to shift into reverse it won't go all the way over to go into reverse all other gears are no problem and it seems to intermittent but when it does it does not stop doing it for a while.

Thank You

Welcome to TRS :)

I assume this is a manual transmission?

Check the fluid level

Which would be an M5OD-R1 transmission in a 1992 Ranger, and it uses ATF fluid, yes Automatic Trans Fluid in a manual trans

So you can shift into 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th(OD) with no issues
But when you move shifter to the right and pull back it won't go back all the way
But you can push it forward in to 5th

Does it matter if engine is ON or OFF?
i.e. can shifter move all the way back every time when engine is off

Does Reverse ever grind when it does engage?

5th and Reverse use the same shift fork

Does the shift arm feel loose at all?
Can you lift up on it?

There is a peak inside the top of the trans here: http://www.therangerstation.com/Magazine/winter2007/shifterbushings.shtml

In the last picture you can see 2 of the 3 shift slots the shifter arm uses to change the gears
Far right is the 1st/2nd shift rail
Center is 3rd/4th
Left is 5th/Reverse

Make SURE trans is in Neutral!!!!!!<<<<<<<!!!!!!
Pull out shifter
See if all looks well with far left shift rail and see if it slides forward(reverse) easily, use a screwdriver, and make sure to slide it back to "neutral", all 3 slots lined up

I think there is an interlock lever on the reverse shift fork, that prevents you from shifting from 5th into reverse. It requires you to to move the shift lever from the center position right, and then straight back, without moving it forward towards 5th at all.

If you're following that shift motion and still having trouble, then it's possible that the interlock is damaged and obstructing the shift into reverse, when it shouldn't.

Spott reminded me of something else which should NOT effect it but.....................
Reverse Light switch on transmission, pull it out and check shifting into reverse

Sorry about that yes its a manual , also brother took this pic of sticker on my tranny F27A XA A672137 with the barcode on right and Ford Logo aboveit.

OK first RonD's questions

So you can shift into 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th(OD) with no issues

Yes

Does it matter if engine is ON or OFF?
i.e. can shifter move all the way back every time when engine is off

No it doesn't matter if running or not

Does Reverse ever grind when it does engage?

Only if I don't push the pedal far enough to disengage it.

5th and Reverse use the same shift fork

Does the shift arm feel loose at all?
Can you lift up on it?

It feels as if it moves about an 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch when i pull up on it then stops

OK I'll check that out too, is it mechanical or electrical I think I read something in the owners manual about this as way to keep from accidentally going into REV when going into or out of 5th.

Thank You

This problem seems to come and go and it can last all day or stop but come back and no amount double clutching or shifting thru the gears will work, thats why I thought it might be this shift safety device as it sounded like it might be a solenoid or some such device that was being intermittent.

Nothing electric in a manual transmission, so no solenoids

F27A XA = 1992 Ranger M5OD-R1 transmission, also called the M5R1

No known issues with Reverse on these, so you have an oddity.

Disassembly would be required, to find the problem.
Might be able to remove floor plate and do some cutting to take off the transmissions top plate but not alot of serviceable access in doing that
