I need some clever thinkers. I recently had my axle grenade. The ring and pinion got chewed up. The ring Gear only lost a total of 7 teeth. The pinion had a total if 3 teeth LEFT.

As it was dying while driving the loss of teeth caused it to Buck sporadically at highway speed.

So after swapping in my new axle I drive it to work. It drives great, everything sounds perfect.

Pop the hood to check oil, motor is covered in oil. Dripping on the ground. But the level is fine. What should I look for? I can't find the leak since the whole bugger is covered in oil.

And sorry in advance for thread placement.

Good thing the rear end didn't lock up on you....as for the oil leak...is the oil on the dipstick the correct color (just wondering if water got into the engine & is forcing the oil out....or maybe it's not engine oil all over the place--but some other kind of fluid)

It seems a little thin to be oil, and the color looks good. It doesn't smell like antifreeze. Doubt tranny fluid would make it to the throttle body. Brake fluid maybe?

Fluids have a distinct smell, taste, color and feel. Can you narrow it down by these senses? Check all your levels to see if any are real low.

Start it up with the hood open and watch it until something starts spraying.

Power steering fluid? If it's engine oil, maybe your PCV line popped off.

It's probably power steering fluid if u turned the wheel at all with the engine off I've seen it blow back out the cap of the resevior and all over the engine.

Had something similar to this in an old chevy. The rear end locked up causing the tranny to blow fluid out of the dipstick over the top of the engine setting it on fire. Melted everything on top of the motor costing me tons to get running again. I'm not saying this is what happened here but the problem in the rear and the fluid over the motor sounds strangely similar

Power steering res is full, and clean. The majority of mess is on the passenger side of the engine. Which sucks since thats the exhaust side, so it burns and smokes.

Levels look fine in everything. The motor was never off while moving.

But, the front pass side bolt holding the valve cover on is sheered off. I know for a fact it was fine before this, I has the cover off a couple weeks ago. Which leads me to another question, how to get the rest of it out so I can put a new one in?

Take the cover off. With any luck the bolt is flush with the cover and not the head. Then you can just grab it with vice grips.

Thanks adsm. Thats a good plan. And a good time to get a new valve cover gasket. Who knows, that could have been the leak when it was jerked back and fourth with all that torque.

If adsm's advice doesnt work you will have to drill into the center of whats left of the bolt and use an easy out to remove it. We actually have a machine at work that electrically burns a hole through stuck crap like this but its meant for broken taps..
