Well 89+ supposedly had better heads to prevent cracking. Externally they're the same. The difference when using headers is that 86-87 had EGR and 88+ does not.

Thanks,was checking out summit racin' and noticed they had pacesetter headers for 88-89 2.9 rangers and b2 w/4wd.The smog crap can still be added on though can't it?

I thought pacesetter had a set for the earlier models? Another option - you could swap to a non-EGR computer and remove the EGR system entirely. If you really wanted to be cool :), '90 Califorina emission (MAF) could be swapped in. Details are in the tech library under MAF conversion, and the instructions are based on the earlier Rangers with EGR. I did the MAF ECM swap on my '88 (non-EGR) with a non-computer friendly camshaft. There is also a guy (BigBlockRanger) around that ran twin turbo on that computer as well.
