Okay... I like to do things the hard way. LOL!!! Sooo with that said I have a 94 5 speed XLT Extended Cab Ranger that I'm getting ready to convert to 4 wheel drive. I've decided to use the stock dana 35 setup. My question is what are the years of Explorers that will work with my Ranger? I'm working a deal with a guy for his parts for an old car that I have sitting around for the last 25 yrs. ( I'm trying to do this with next to no $$ out of my pocket) I know I need to pull the engine and swap out the X-member. (it needs pulled for more reasons than just for the 4X4 swap) Yes, I do plan on doing a SAS in the future, but just not right now. Thanks for looking, Brent.

91-94 explorer. 90-97 ranger (just watch for 93-97's with 4cyl or 3.0L engines as they may have a hybrid d28/35)

The guy I working with has two 4.0 explorers with non electric shift transfer cases. But I don't recall the years of the vehicles. I do have an old eb dana 30 that my buddy swapped years ago. but it's just the housing. He totally gutted it trying to pull a stump.

Ok, I ditched the explorer and picked up a dana 30 from a Heep Wrangler. Will a 4.9 fit into a 94 Ranger? I have two engines a 351w and the 300 six I don't mind doing some cutting and welding. I've been doing it for about 20 years now. This is just my first 4x4 conversion and repower.

Some firewall massage will be required. I measured for a 4.9 swap once and found if you place the back of the block in the same location as a stock V6 you have less than 3" from the end of the crank pulley to the radiator.

So just the length well be an issue with the 300? What about the Windsor? I've heard that the steering gear box might hit and the exhaust would be a tight fit. What about the AC/heater box clearance on the firewall for either power plant?

Oh the reason I ask is that the Windsor is built up and the 300 is bone stock...

I started the tear down at 5 this morning. Trying to beat some of this heat wave we have going on! Anyhow got the motor and trans yarded out and pressure washer the engine bay. So I decided to go with the 351 and a 4 speed that came from a full sized mid 80's Bronco (still debating about using a 3 speed from my old 67 bronco)

Hello, I could use a little input here. Has anyone put a top loader 4 speed and NP208 into a 2nd gen? So far I've installed a 3 inch body lift and started to test fit the Trans/transfer case and I'm having issues with it fitting in squarely I.E. parallel with the frame rails. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Run it not parallel. :icon_twisted:
There is some threads about using the 208, use the google custom search at the top right. It seems to pull up better results.

I've been searching and looking. But my searching skill must be lacking.

Quick question I've looked for any info that I could find on oil pan modifications. I have a standard rear sump pan from an f150. Do I need to notch, beat anywhere on the pan? Fyi I've decided to go with the 351 and 4 speed/np208...
