Degreasing an old wiring harness

Well thanks to 2813Josh, I have a new to me engine wiring harness for my truck:yahoo:

I'm looking for a bit of advise though....

I would really like to degrease / clean it up before I install and I was wondering what you would do if you were degreasing a harness.

I plan to spray it down with some simple green and wipe away most of the crud. After that, I'll soak it for a while (plugs out of the water) in simplegreen to get the rest out.

Then just let it hang for a bit and dry out for a week or so before installing. When I install it, I plan to use plenty of dielectric grease.

So, does this sound feasible or should I try another way?

WD40 and a rag works pretty good too.

Fix it till its broke!
Sounds good, honestly anything will work fine as long as it doesn't eat plastic or instantly corrode contacts. Just make sure it is dry when installing. You could use soap and water if you wanted too. Electronics aren't too picky about stuff like that provided you make sure the contacts are dry before applying power. I mean most of it sits outside the vehicle subject to everything you can think of, only the contacts are seals within the harnesses.

One of the old cleaners that has been good is ,"SPIC&SPAM". Another feature is that when we use it we do not have any shorting out of the conductors. However we are working with higher voltages so it might not matter.

take it to a car wash and use the high pressure soap then rinse it with the high pressure rinse and hang up to dry that should take care of 99 percent of the crud then wipe it down with dishwashing soap and water on an old rag and scrub it good that way you can find any flaws p.s. don't do this inside on the kitchen table the wife will get poed
