I'm stuck in the middle of nowhere!

Took my 98 Ranger out to toy around because we got 3 inches of snow last night. Long story short I'm stuck and can easily get out IF MY 4X4 WOULD ENGAGE! It has always worked fine. I thought it was engaged but obviously not. The light is on solid, tried low too. Sounds like it wants to engage down there but won't.

PLEASE is there anything I can do to get it engaged?!

Pop off the caps that hide the lug nuts. There's a metal screen at the center of the hub. Use a pick, small screwdriver, etc to carefully remove the screen (permanently). Once that's done, you can simply push in on the piece that's under it. From memory, it's halfway in till it clicks to unlock it, all the way in and it will unlock. It's an easy way to have manual hubs on the PVH Rangers.

I'm pointing up on a hill and there is a ditch behind me. I tried feathering all 3 pedals, will catch, then slide back down. This sucks.

This video explains what you're doing:

Awesome, it worked! Now I need to figure out how to fix the issue. I don't want manual hubs, I want it to work right but that's just me.

There's a long article in the tech section of TRS that walks you through troubleshooting the PVH system if you want to keep it and make it work properly. This gives you a great way to work around it when it fails, however. Very handy as a backup process.

Absolutely! Hopefully it's a simple vacuum leak I can fix on the cheap. I always knew these all go out, just never happened to me until now.

Question, the hubs are locked, but it's only in 4x4 when I switch it on. Does that mean that it also disconnects and connects at the transfer case?

Correct. Two different systems. The switch commands the transfer case to engage the front driveshaft, and separately calls for a vacuum pulse to lock in the hubs.

karma. snow can be really deceiving when playing around. I thought I would do that once in my awd explorer. nice road with a straight transition to the ditch and a field. thought I would just drive on the side of the road and play around until I got buried. had to make that damn phone call saying "I'm stuck and need pulled out"

well....I would say that manual hubs are the correct way. pvh is the wrong way.

especially, if your crossing high water in winter.
