My credo
19K, 19D, 92Y, 88M, 91F....OIF-III (2004-2005)
Trucks have never been more capable.

The 9.75 rear axle in most half tons is materially stronger than the D60 of yesteryear. Only weakness is being a semi-float. Can't take quite as much weight but will take more power to break it. 8.8 in the lighter half tons is stronger than the best stock 9" which was the best you could hope for in a older half ton. Not sure the 8.8 is even offered anymore though, maybe just for the base V6.

Springs have came a really long ways too. And brakes. And tires. And frames. And transmissions.

Anything an older truck could do a new one with the same name will do better... as long as someone who knows what they are doing is driving.

However many peoples expectations have grown faster than the trucks capabilities... and toys don't get any smaller either.
Didn't say they weren't capable, the fact today is suspensions have softened up a lot so people can buy their 1 ton truck to use as a family car and ride like their family sedan, then bitch whine and moan because the ass end sags like hell when they try to pull their toys behind them. Well sure you bought a 1 ton truck but you wanted it to ride like a family car so you get car like suspension to make it ride like that but now you can't tow or haul anything.

The people that squat a one ton and complain about it are in denial that they really need something F-450+

The stuff I see these things pulling around me is pretty wild... they seem to take it in stride.

I'll say this ONCE and anyone who quibbles the point becomes the target of years of pent up Rage...

Fully boxed frames SUCK FAGGOT A$$HOLES.

And here's why:

They are made of pieces in lighter steel that is pressed with smaller, lighter *(cheaper)press machines, with cheaper dies....
and these pieces are welded together.

These frames because they are fully boxed Can (and do) trap and retain moisture and these frames can (and do) rust from the inside>out. The 1998-up trucks are already being scrapped from terminal frame rust, while many earlier C-channel frames are and will continue to go strong for decades...

I have the front half of an '01 supercab that I have because I was anticipating buying my uncle's '04, but I was in the hospital when it was time for him to trade it in, so I missed out.
He traded it in because it would no longer pass state inspection because of FRAME RUST!.

I will be building a 1998-up supercab truck but before I do that ENTIRE FRAME will be stripped, cleaned and spend the weekend in a molten zinc tank to be galvanized inside and out so I KNOW it will never rust out on me...

Either that OR I will fabricate an entire frame out of heavy walled rube from SCRATCH!!!

And on this I'm thinking of using three pieces of 2x2" tube stacked together and welded to a
piece of 1/4" plate on the out-board side...

AND I will either use the frame tubes as an air tank or a reservoir tank for the lube oil system.

If it is pressurized and cracks I will know it has done so PDQ... and won't have much problem finding the crack either...

What '98 trucks had a fully boxed frame?

The bottom flange of a C channel catches a lot of debris and rots out frames too.
