4.88 gears on an FX4

Has anyone put 4.88s in their ranger with a 8.8 31 spline rear diff WITH TORSEN LIMITED SLIP? Ive seen some write ups but everyone just has a small cross pin that needs to clear the gears. Mine has a much larger block that slides in instead. I wanna make sure it will work before i buy the gears.

I had 4.56 gears installed and they had to modify something to assemble it. I thought they said something about grinding the pin. I would expect 4.88 gears to be more of a problem.

Might have to grind both. Grinding the tip of the gear teeth isn't bad, there's no load out by the top anyways. Just make sure you don't get into the contact patch area.

Does that block take up that entire rectangular opening? Or is it just the slightly smaller one in the middle that the bolt goes through?

It takes up the entire space. Thats why im concerned. I dont know how much of the gear i can grind off.

If someone has already done this exact setup id love to see a picture.

Thanks a lot for finding those. I did a bunch of google searches before posting this question. I dont know how i missed all of those threads haha.

So it looks like my options are 4.56s or switch to an open carrier and get a locker. Hmmm.

My plan is to superlift and run 35s. Id love to have a selectable locker but its not really in my budget. And im thinking 4.56s would be okay with that tire size. I like to do long distance trips both on and off road, so the slightly higher gears might be perfect for my situation.

If you have an automatic transmission and do not do more then light rock crawling, the 4.56 gears should work OK with the 35" tires. However, as you already know they won't be great off-road.

Ya its an automatic. I mainly use the truck for exploring/trail riding. Sometimes I get into some difficult stuff but not often.

I did the math and in turns out I will have better torque with 4.56s and 35" tires than I would with 4.10s and 33" tires, which is what I have now. Im pretty happy with the way my truck drives now so 4.56s shouldn't be a problem. :icon_thumby:
