Engine turns once then instantly dies

I have a 2003 Ranger Edge w/ 86k that has an intermittent starting problem, after being driven and then sitting for at least 10 minutes sometimes the truck will not start everything acts normal and when you go to crank it sounds exactly like it should but the engine turns over once acts like its going to start and then shuts off, when this happens you can hold the key to start but it won't crank more than once. Truck never does this when its been sitting for a long time at home only after being driven, Ford dealer has pointed to a fuel pump but I really don't think thats the problem. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated

Ya have to check it when it won't start. You could go all day and not find out what is happening unless you start out with the basics. When it don't start, how much fuel pressure do you have? Is there spark at the plugs?
One easy waay to start off if you don't have many tools is to squirt an once of gasoline into the throttle body (when it isn't starting) and see if it fires then. If YES then look to the FPR and the fuel pump.

it definitely has spark and fuel pressure, unplugged the iac valve and was able to replicate the problem so i'll clean that and see if the problem comes back if it does might be time to replace it, better than the $900 Ford wanted for a new fuel pump
