Is there anything else that needs to be done to a 97 X cab to go from 3inches of lift to 5.5inches of lift? Thinking of things like drive shafts?

My credo
it is what it is
if its strictly offroad use only build a 1 piece rear shaft and lengthen the front. if daily use on and offroad have the shafts lengthened. could also adjust trans and tcase angle by building a lowering bracket

A drop pitman arm or maybe swingset steering.

So I can just have the stock shafts lengthened?

With that much lift I doubt you would need anything done with the driveshafts... front will be fine, I was running 6-7" lift for a while and was just fine, now I'm down to like 3 or 4" since the springs are now fried... I'm not sure about the rear but I imagine you would be fine, I switched to an explorer 8.8 when I did the lift and kept the stock shaft. Being you have a 2 piece shaft at most find a '98+ one piece shaft and you'll probably be fine, or at least drop the carrier bearing.

I would definitely recommend the $200 FA600 pitman arm, proper linkage angles make a huge difference...
