So about a year ago I bought this truck and it ran but ran really rich and smelled like gas, oil smells like gas too. I didn't really do any work on it at the time, was trying to find a good wiring manual as there are quite a few messed up wires, never really found one and it has sat since then.

The last few days I have been trying to get it going again, replaced the battery and put about 4 gallons of new gas in the tank (it was almost empty) try to start it and it cranked but didn't fire. Tried some starter fluid, got a big backfire and flame out of the intake but it didn't start. Now when I try to start it, it cranks, seems to try to fire once or twice but then just cranks. The fuel pump does kick on and according to the previous owner they wired it to be on all the time when the key is on because it stopped working (I suspect the inertia switch was the cause of that). Any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you check fuel pressure? It's possible that it's just too low.

Any other history for the last time it was running?

Has the distributor been out or moved?

Starting fluid or gasoline directly into the intake should get an engine to start and run until added fuel is gone, unless there is an issue with the Spark or spark timing, which it reads like there is.
If distributor hasn't been touched then it could be the TFI module has failed, not all that uncommon.
