Hey guys I have scored a free 8.8 axle from a 94 Explorer. I know this axle isn't highly desirable due to it being the drum set up but hey it was free and I think it will work for me.
As I search for aftermarket parts there doesn't seem to be a lot of focus on the 94 and earlier axle. I can't find chromoly shafts. I'm also assuming that any 31 spline 8.8 locker will work in this axle.
Is drum vs disk the only difference between 94 and earlier and 95 and later? I'm assuming the widths are the same too.

All explorer axles are the same other than the brake backing plates and related brake parts. I think the disc brake axles are about 1/32" wider per shaft to clear the drum parking brake, squeaked a bit when I converted it to discs but it shut up eventually...

There are a couple very minor changes over the years, but nothing that will keep any parts from interchanging... the LS carrier changed a touch on the newer ones, the tabs for the frictions got smaller on the new ones. As far as lockers, shafts and gears they are all the same.

Can this be confirmed? I'm ready to order new axle shafts for my '94 explorer axle and want to make sure that 95-02 explorer shafts will fit.

Also on this topic, I'm looking for suggestions what axle shafts to buy.

I don't have recommendations on shafts, but I have done enough research to know that the slight extra width on the disc brake axles is outside of the bearings so you are safe to order shafts for a disc brake axle.
