back yard tranny removal/install

well here is the deal i just picked up a donor truck but i have to get the tranny out. its a stock b2 woul dit possible with the truck on jack stands to lift it enough to get it out?? then its going into my 6" lifted b2 so that will be no issue

You should have plenty of room.

I really don't think we had my BII on jacks when we replaced the clutch, it was all stock then.

You shouldn't have any problem.

I just replaced the A4LD on the ex I sold... I had it on stands, it helps to get the $80 harbor freight tranny jack found here

you can drop the tranny without jackstands...but the bellhousing wont clear the frame when you go to pull it out. Samsonite is right about the tranny jack. you will definitely need something if you dont have a buddy around to help bolt the tranny back up.

I was able to wiggle my FM-146 out and the M5OD in its place on a bone stock B2 with no jacks under it.

So it can be done.

only thing i can say is i second the tranny jack thing ive done enough of them to tell ya its worth every penny to get the right jack saves you your elbows and the pan as opposed to any other kind of jack

I have an ATV jack that works great for lifting the tranny and t-case.

when doing tranny work ground clearance is your friend. put them both on as many STABLE blocks as you can. I like to use railroad ties but cinderblocks work very well.

3 ft is nice.

This distinction hasn't been drawn. Maybe it's obvious.

If the Bronco II has an FM146 or A4LD, you can remove the bellhousing while under the truck, and it's not hard to get out from underneath.

If it has a Mazda M5OD, you can't remove the bellhousing, and it's quite a lot more difficult. Though I believe you can put the transmission on the ground and jack up ONE frame rail just to get it out from underneath.

Be careful with cinder blocks. When they fail, they fail very suddenly. And they are designed to hold a uniform load, which doesn't describe your vehicle. Railroad ties will take quite a lot more deformation before failure, though if you put one under the tires, please make sure the vehicle can't roll even a tiny bit...

When we did my tranny we jacked the truck up and put it on ramps, then jackstands under to catch it should a ramp happen to kick out.

thanks for the advice i will be jacking the donor up and just pullin the fm145 out im sure it cant be that hard as well i will be removing the a4ld outta my 6" lifted b2 im sure i wont need any jack for that bad boy

When we pulled the one out of the donar we just torched the front clip off and pulled both the engine and tranny out together, then pulled the tranny off on the garage floor. If you don't have any plans for the donar this may be a option, since the tranny supplies alot of support for the engine anyway.

The Ford service proceedure calls for REMOVING the Y-pipe when the tranmission is to be removed from these vehicles.

Yes it's POSSIBLE to do the job without removing the Y-pipe but if the body mounts are even the least little bit collapased you are basically screwed.

BTW, when parting out a vehicle ALWAYS save the catalytic converter!
