Hey guys, so a couple months ago I was driving my truck around town, and while moving, it just lost forward drive and revved. So I lifted my foot, tried again, nothing.

Tried 1st, 2nd, reverse, OD on and off, nothing. Now, it does have a slight movement of the ground is flat and you Rev it in gear. It will creep forward, then stop and roll back.

Fluid level is good. First thing I checked.

Any ideas?

Fluid level is good, but does it drop going from engine off to idle?

I only checked it when warm and running, and it was where it was supposed to be.

Should I be checking it cold?

He meant check it with engine off, it should be over full line
Then check with engine idling, it should drop to "normal" level
Than means main pump is at least working.

Alright so I checked fluid level when cold, truck hadn't been started in weeks. then checked again once on, and once warm. fluid level did drop from cold. So this tells me the pump is working right?

Right. If the level is very high with the engine off and then drops to below or close to correct with you start it the pump works. So much for the easy stuff.

Valve body gasket may have failed. I guess the next step is to get a gauge and see what the line pressure is.

alright, what kind of gauge, and what line would I hook it to? I know zero about these transmissions, clearly lol.

thanks for your help thus far. I've been neglecting the truck but with summer and camping season coming up i'd like to have it back on the road.

You need an oil pressure/transmission fluid pressure gauge, something that can read upwards of 300 PSI.

On the trans, IIRC front driver's corner, just behind the bell, are a set of pipe plugs. If you clean up the case one should be labeled "line". Test that one.

Sooooo I've still not checked line pressure. Gauges are dumb expensive and no one I know has one to lend me.

I did do this video to better show whats going on, in case my explanation was bad.

I also did go under to find the line you were talking about and it does look like it's been leaking a decent amount. Bad valve body gasket, or bad valve body all together maybe?

Since my first camping trip is in 2 weeks, I sent the truck to a local shop. Will report back with what the issue was when we know more.

So far it's looking like just a bad torque converter. I'm having them drop the trans pan to look for metal shavings just to be sure. Fingers crossed.
