So today I am talking with my Brother-in-law up in Ohio just a bit ago. He has completed his 30th year at the Ford assembly plant up there. Today is his actual 30th anniversary there. While we were talking about kids and pets he said that Ford had a recall just about a month ago on China made Mustang transmissions!!!! WTF...I did not know Ford was outsourcing to China?? Did you guys know about this??

I hope your being sarcastic. You just figured out that car parts were being made in China?

Yup, and the recall was a different fluid. :icon_thumby:

Whatever trans they use is a nice trans, they make a lot of high end transmissions.

Not a new thing at all, the last American transmission put in a Ranger was the C5 in 1984.

Yep, not really new news. Kind of sad they have too to keep prices low. Look at where all the Fusions are made, Mexico. Think I saw that part of the new UAW contract talks, Ford was planning on bringing on up to 10,000 more workers here in the States.

Which trans was it?

EDIT: Actually found out it is the manual trans made by Getrag (German company) in their Chinese plant.

Yeah, the M5OD was one of the last "in house" manual transmissions made by Ford. They have been buying mannies from other companies for years. TKs were made by Mazda before Ford bought them, FM's were made by Mitsubishi, the ZF was made by Germans, and most of the Mustang transmissions from about 1980 on and most of the F-150 trannies in the 90s were Tremecs, which strongly resemble certain BW transmissions.

Ford buying 3rd part manual transmissions built to be used with their engines is older than I am Bro.

Not only that Adsm (Bro), but my buddy told me at last years ATRA Convention (Automatic Transmission Rebuilders Association), they were told that the Big 3 will soon all be using Aisin Warner transmissions only as autos. And they will all have interchangeable parts.

They've already started. I can pull a 6 speed out of an 09 Cobalt, swap the front case half that contains the bell housing so I have the right pattern, but the right converter in it, and throw it in a Fusion.

I am not all that sure the Mazda M5OD was an in house transmission for Ford. A quick internet search couldn't find it being claimed being made by anyone other than Mazda.

The M5OD is in fact a Mazda transmission, but it's production wasn't started until after Ford bought a majority share in Mazda, so it can generally be considered "in house".

Ford didn't have a controlling interest until '96, well after 1988 whent the M5OD came out. :icon_confused:

I thought Ford had started buying up Mazda much earlier than 96. They had been working on a number of projects together by that point.

Also, that still leaves a great deal of that transmission's production run falling in the time frame when Ford did own Mazda.

They started buying them up in '79, but didn't get a controlling interest until '96.

Design time is what counts, and that happened more than a couple years before they where bought out.
