Most rear ends have the gear ratio tagged on it, right? All my Fords have had a tag on the rear end as far as I can recall. It is a pain buying something that has be bastardized, you know??
Most rears do. He said his tag is missing.

And yes, it's a huge pain buying something that someone else has messed with.

In this case, I think we are gonna need to do an actual gear calculation.

Tonka, put the trans in N. Jack up a single rear wheel and mark the inside of the tire at 6:00. Then grab the drive shaft and turn it 1 full turn. See how many times the tire goes around. That number will be your gear ratio.

6 AM or PM? It's 6:13 PM here. I'll do it tomorrow. :icon_rofl:

I know that math didn't make sense either. I arrived at 2.98. Unless maybe the axle or at least it's gears came out of something other than a RBV. Maybe a Mustang?

How important is it to know what's in the "mystery axle" though? I know it ain' right and plan on replacing it. It's an 8.8" axle though, if it's significantly heavier duty I'd rather convert it rather than go back down to a 7.5" & screw around with brake shoes self-adjusters and all that crap.
