93 2.3 4 cyl 5 spd.
Haven't had it long. Started running rough under load in 4th & 5th.
Checked fuel pressure, OK. Including engine running & briefly floored throttle.
Took EGR off and cleaned it out - wasn't plugged but wasn't closing tightly and sealing. Now it does.
When I apply vacuum it opens. So seems to be OK. No vacuum leaks at the position sensor mounting
surface.
Tried running the codes. Seemed to be difficult getting good clear signal pulses with proper separations so
not 100% sure of the below results.
First time thru I got 1-1-1 (check engine light wasn't on steady, just when starting), then 32 (EGR position sensor reading low), then 54 (air charge temp sensor voltage too high), then 57 (neutral pressure switch - what's this?), .
Second time thru I again got the 32 and 57, but also 75 (BOO always closed - what effect would this have?) then 42 (running rich). The 32 and 42 would seem to sort of match up - if the EGR wasn't opening, if the EGR control solenoid wasn't working, it would likely run rich, correct?
Then it got worse - after I did those tests (key on engine off) now the check engine stays on permanently, it dies when it first starts cold, and the engine doesn't run a steady rpm - if I hold the throttle steady on level road, it will all of a sudden feel like I've let all the way off the gas and then when I step on it even a tiny bit it surges as if I've floored it for a second. Feels like I'm turning the key off and on, but the engine doesn't die. If I'm pulling uphill in 4th or 5th, or running at low rpm as in 4th at 25 mph, in both cases having to step on the gas a little bit, it doesn't do that. If I let off the gas altogether when it jerks slow, the engine doesn't die and will idle OK. When I start it warm the engine runs probly 2500+ rpm for maybe 15 seconds then gradually settles down to the correct idle.
I've got an old OBD 1 scanner for my 89 Lincoln Mark VII 5.0 EEC-IV so tried that instead of the jumper wires and test light. As soon as I plug the scanner in the light comes on and after I turn the ignition on it never goes to flashing codes.
Same thing if I use the jumper wire and test light - the test light comes on bright as soon as I hook it up and never goes off and never flashes. I've waited over 2 minutes and the light never goes off or flashes.
Did something in the ECU go bad somehow while I was pulling codes? That's when all this other stuff started.
Thanks!
