Watched vid. I agree timing issue, whether dizzy or cam :dunno:

Double check dizzy...or does that year have one?

You could check cam timing vs crank with a magnetic base and dial indicator on the lifter. You would probably need cam specs. Or perhaps I'm over thinking things....good luck.

After watching the video...

It really sounds like a timing chain

Thats more less what the 351W in my 77 LTD II sounded like when it jumped...and bent the valves
Was it running a high lift cam? I didn't think any of the SBF's were interference designs.

Ok well its nothing but a gasket and time to pull the timing cover off and nothing but time to take the dizzy out. I’m going to do them both now.

Nope, it was all stock. But it bent the valves, got knicks in the piston to prove it. Took a couple pushrods to. Although, im not 100% sure it jumped time, i just assumed because of the bent valves when i pulled the head, it still sits ihe garage at the old house where its been since 07

Distributor is out. There is no torsion play... but the shaft has about 1/4” end play. It’s the original distributor so I am replacing it anyways. But how does one tell if one has a steel gear or a cast iron gear.... as far as I can tell it’s original engine and I don’t think a 1990 that was manufactured 10/89 had a roller block

It would probably have a flat tappet cam in a roller block. Should only be one option for a ‘90.

Distributor is in, base timing set at 10* btdc....
runs beautiful.... until it warms up, then it does the same thing I’m the video. Since I ordered a new one anyways, I am going to cut the cat out tomorrow.

Can you check fuel pressure while running? I had two fuel pumps. one brand new, that would get heat soaked and stop pumping. It was on a 460 but had similar symptoms as yours. I went to electric pump and problem never came back.

I have electric fuel pump.... but thats interesting, this new problem started after having to switch tanks and run about 10 miles on the front tank. Fuel filter maybe?

I think your pumps are in tank? Or do you have one on the frame rail? Wondering about if your system has the reservoir, maybe it's sized just right to run for a bit then starve. probably not the problem if you have in tank. Maybe the in tank pump sock is contaminated, floaters?

I have seen a selector valve get stuck half way inbetween positions and starve them for fuel.

Not sure. The driveway is wet so I won’t be doing anything with it until tomorrow. But the previous owner said he never used the front tank because he couldn’t get it to fill.... like the gent is screwed up.... so the aside from the 1 gallon I was able to get into it 6 months ago the gas in that tank is at least 11 years old..... I did put fuel stablizer in it but I am guessing there is a lot of crap it could have picked up.

I had this happen on my 79 F-250 but the problem started within minutes after switching tanks. I drove 30 miles home on the rear tank after getting gas.

Tomorrow I’m pulling out the cats and looking for vacuum leaks. Since my ignition is electronic advance I don’t see how vacuum leak could effect the timing?
