Flipping people off, cussing them, jockeying for position before a lane drop, these are all things that makes driving fun

I can see both sides, but for me, driving is an escape from the general BS of life.

Rather in the city, freeway, or Bo Dukein' some old dirt road. The reason people find driving boreing, mundane, whatever is because most have been so saturated with their percieved busy lives.

I love driving, and i hate riding in the passanger seat. I have no desire to have a car that does the driving for me.

Perhaps autonomous cars should always just be an option for those who want it.

I'm intrigued by the technology. I thinks it's cool in a lot of ways. But I don't want it for myself unless my health dictates a need for it.

Regarding phone calls and texts, the automated car can handle that much better than humans. Communication is what can bus and microprocessors are designed to do really well. And, As for finger gestures, horn honking and other road rage niceties, well, that can be automated also. [emoji6]

But at when i get out at the next stop light, itll hurt alot more decking a robot in the mouth.

I can see it now, instead of the soft orangish yellow glow of the usually ignorable check engine light, youll get a "This vehicle has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down" message on the infotament screen. Followed by a 300 dollar towbill, and a 250 dollar diagnostic fee just to tell you your fuel cap wasnt tight.

I've never been in an autonomous vehicle but from the experience I have with so called smart trucks with adaptive cruise control and collision avoidance bs, the technology is most definitely flawed. It's in the drivers best interest to turn it off so that you don't get rear ended going under a bridge or around a curve. All the computer wants to do is stop the truck when it sees somethingt that it thinks you are going to hit. It's actually scary to drive these things.

the solution to that is simple.....place tens of billions of transmitters in each tunnel or curve on the road to tell the autonomous/collision avoidance vehicles not to slam on the brakes unless they really have to. or at the very least if they think it might be a good idea.

that brings up a great idea,,,,an "autonomous control transfer zone" as you approach the bridge, or whatever, control of your vehicle (is it really your vehicle?) is transferred to a computer that will safely guide all vehicles thru the obstacle. they release the vehicle back to its system when the obstacle is cleared. what could possible go wrong? :shok:

Reader's Digest:

Uber had disabled Volvo's automated emergency braking as it interfered with Uber's own system.
Uber expected drivers to remain vigilant behind the wheel and assume control in emergency situation, but there was no system in place to warn driver that a situation was arising.
Driver was monitoring system, not watching road when the accident occurred.

Pedestrian (Cyclist) was wearing dark clothing/no reflectors, there wasn't any illumination on that part of road, and didn't use crosswalk.
Pedestrian tested positive for marijuana and methamphetamine.

This crap is dangerous. If you haven't actually driven one of these vehicles you really have no clue how bad it really is. And really shouldn't make dumbass comments about it . This government mandated bs truly sucks.

I have had deer run across the highway at night. Nothing to do but loose as much speed as possible, keep it on the road and prepare for impact.

I don’t know if a normal driver would have reacted much better, especially at night.

I seen that video. Honestly, i truely believe i would of had time to react and prevent it even driving my peterbilt. A quick swerve to the oppisite direction the lady wss heading is all it would have taken. But the computer wont do that, it cant reason that "oh hitting a mailbox, light pole, or sign is better then nailing a person".

Its been brought up in trucking articles about self driving trucks, if a human operated truck has a choice between a busload of kids or a road sign, the person will take the sign, all the computer knows is "we are going to hit something, no where to go, brace for impact"

I love how its ok to blame non living objects (guns for instance) for killing people, but oh no, we cant blame anything that is a sign of "progress".

Computers (to my knowledge) are incapable of reasoning.

All they know if yes or no, hit or stop, etc.

Computers make simple logical decisions all the time. Assigning a priority or value to objects and then choosing the least cost alternative is easy.
