i know,i know BUT ive had a bad run of 4.0's. and do have a real nice runnin 2.9 with a complete wiring harness.. is it a PITA?? ive never even done a 4.0 swap so im in the dark. i know the 2.9 will all bolt up. any one every done it? this ranger is on its 4th motor, 2 3.0's and 2 4.0's. its time for a 2.9

Those are all good motors! What's happened to them? I think swapping in another 4.0 is the best bet.

Sell the 2.9 and buy another 4.0. There's -no- justification for doing this swap. The 4.0 was a huge improvement in reliability over the 2.9.

^ We'll let you go since you're a newbie, but I would seriously advise AGAINST telling a moderator what he can or cannot say/do.

Either way, we're TRYING to tell the poor guy he wont be happy with the results of his hard labor/money when he's done. He's better off swapping in a GOOD 4.0L and maintain it or go all out and do the 5.0L swap.

From what I read when getting parts for my 2.3 to 4.0 swap, you will need a 2.9 transmission, as the bellhousings are slightly different.

Bellhousing is the same between 2.8, 2.9, and 4.0 OHV. 4.0 SOHC is close enough to work (one bolt moved).

ok,thanks for all the input, BUT im doin the 2.9 swap. that 95 ranger cant weight any more than a 92 reg cab ranger with a 2.9. all the 2.9's ive had/have run beauty, NO lifter noise,no oil burnin(VC leak) and have never let me down. and yas i have worked um. ive towed a lincoln TC,1/2 ton pickup's,explores, ect, have pics to prove it.The 2.9 has more than enough power to push the 95 ranger.and besides the 4.0 is a gas hog.SO the plan is to take the 88 2.9 from me 89 B2

and put in the ranger. THEN do the V8 swap(ive been wanting tado) to the B2

Dash wiring will be the biggest obstacle. Normally you could just swap the dash, but the break line for dash swaps being nice was 92/93 MY. Worse yet, the Rangers got OBDII systems in 95, so that will be even more fun as the dash harness is different.
