All you need is a bill of sale, not a lawyer. Add that to a copy of the ad and you are set. I might also call the sheriff's office with the VIN.

"Lost title" is a lazy man's scam IMO.

In Arizona they only need go to the MVD and pay $4 for a duplicate title. You can even do it online and have it mailed to your house.

No excuse for "lost title" IMO.

i have a lost title situation that's not a scam. A acquired a 97 Acura cl, to fix. A friend of the Family said if I can get it running , I could have it and he would get the titlte tio me.
Got the car home to florida from north Carolina, replaced the altenator, played with the clutch pedal to get it working and WHALAH, fixed. Now the guy has just had jaw replacement surgery and cant find the title and I'm not gonna pressure a guy who just had half of his face replaced to go looking in old boxes for a title. Now I have a car I cant sell but way to nice to part out.

You might check into getting a bonded title.

He should be able to get a replacement title with a quick trip to the DMV.

In Indiana there is a process for titling a vehicle if the title is unobtainable to you. Don't assume anything. Comb through the states website. Even the BMV employees can be unaware of how things can be done if it's something unusual.

When I was in high school I tried to get a title for a motorcycle/dirtbike a guy gave me.

"Nope, can't be done" They were appalled I didn't get a title with it.

Now after learning more about it it seems getting another title is easier than getting a carb kit for it...

Will is spot on with this one. Get the vin run and get a bill of sale with both parties signature and you are good to go. A bill of sale is considered a legal binding document in my state and will hold up in court.

From my experience the lost title thing comes from the following:
- 10% legitimately lost, owner just plain too lazy to get a replacement.
- 30% have a title loan on them that has gone unpaid and the owner needs to dump it.
- 60% have been passed around between several owners without the proper paperwork done between each transfer. Someone eventually says screw it and sells without title at all. Usually tweakers involved.

I don't buy them unless they're at or below scrap weight so I can at least break even.

We can't do "abandoned title" anymore here, used to be fairly easy, but now you have to pay a towing company to take possession of the vehicle and obtain a title and then buy it back from them. VERY spendy and almost always a waste of time. Or track down the legal owner (next to impossible, usually.)

In summary "lost" titles in South Dakota almost always end up with a vehicle that's impossible to register.

In theory it isn't a big deal, it is a turn off for me though. Kind of like "easy fixes" Like when the car only needs a rotor to run, drop $3 on it and you can double your price... unless you know it needs more than a rotor. Fuel pumps are common too, usually included.

Something so simple to increase the value of the vehicle... why can't they do it? Being close to Nebraska most of them I see are out of state to boot.

Granted I haven't bought a vehicle since 2005...

My intention of posting expo was for a ranger v8 swap. It is not worth trying to get a title. Anything over 10 years old you don't have to have a title to scrap it.
